The
city of Arts and Sciences is a great leisure centre with educational
purposes which opened its doors on April 1998. A unique place to enjoy
Art, Science and Nature. It is an international reference point with
which the Comunidad Valenciana faces the challenge of the new
millenium.
Located in the old bed of the River Turia, with an
area of 350.000 m2, the City of Arts and Sciences, has been conceived
as a “city within a city”.
Two spanish architects of international prestige, Santiago Calatrava
and Félix Candela, have designed an exceptional architectonic work,
where the harmony among shapes and structures is truly remarkable,
apart from the contents of the buildings. A futuristic city, that takes
into account the mediterranean tradition of sea and light, white and
blue.
The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of the Arts and Sciences) in Valencia is a spectacular creation. The buildings in this imposing leisure and culture centre designed by Santiago Calatrava comprise an avant-garde image which takes us into the 21st century.
- The Hemisfèric shows the very latest Imax films, a planetarium and an innovative laser show.
- The "Príncipe Felipe" Science Museum is a spectacular building which makes up interactive scientific motifs and exhibitions where visitors can touch everything and become protagonists of curious experiments.
- All the ecosystems of the world with their plant and animal inhabitants, will come together in the Oceanogràfic.
- The best opera performances, concerts and scenic shows will be contemplated at the auditoriums in el Palau de les Arts, with its spectacular giant oval-shape design.
- L'Umbracle is shaped by a succession of 55 fixed arches and 54 floating
arches of 18 meters of height. On them there will grow climbing plants,
which will provide shade along the whole landscaped walk and will give
L´Umbracle the aspect of a XIX century "Winter Garden".
